MEAN WELL KAA-8R-16S is a KNX universal switch actuator with eight independent latching relay channels, rated 16 A per relay at 230 VAC. It supports lighting and heating loads or four paired shutter/blind outputs, manual operation and KNX Data Secure. The device total-current limit and load-specific switching limits must also be observed.

The relay rating applies to the switched load, not to an AC power output generated by this actuator. The actuator is powered from the KNX bus and switches an external load supply. Select the load, upstream protection and wiring for the actual application.
Eight independent potential-free bistable latching relay channels can be configured for lighting or heating, or paired for up to four shutter/blind outputs. Shutter outputs use the relay channels; they are not additional independent power channels.
Typical applications include building automation, lighting and blind or shutter control. KNX Data Secure, manual operation and a three-year catalogue warranty are specified.

The 16 A rating is per relay and the 80 A total limit also applies across the device. Per-channel maxima are not unrestricted simultaneous ratings. The high short-duration inrush figures are relay switching capabilities, not continuous load-current allowances.
The electronics require no additional auxiliary power supply beyond the KNX bus. Unless stated otherwise, catalogue specifications are measured at 230 VAC, rated load and 25°C ambient.

Each group below gives the catalogue maximum quantity of any one listed driver reference on one relay channel at 230 V. It is not a combined allowance for every driver in that group. Mixed loads require their combined steady-state and inrush loading to remain within the actuator limits.
These references establish switched-input loading. They do not imply that every listed driver has a dimming input. For dimming, choose the actual driver version with a compatible DC 0(1)–10 V interface; for a non-dimmable driver, use relay ON/OFF control only. Confirm the full driver order code and installation conditions when selecting equipment.
Manual Operation and KNX Functions
The front-panel buttons select channels and manually switch their outputs, while channel LEDs show status. A separate programming button and programming LED are used when assigning the KNX individual address. Scenes and time functions are configurable in the ETS application.
Use the manufacturer’s matching ETS database and firmware for the selected actuator. The catalogue specifies ETS 5.0 configuration; secure commissioning additionally requires a KNX Secure-capable ETS version and the product’s device certificate.
Secure Commissioning
Obtain the matching application database from the manufacturer or the ETS online catalogue and check its firmware compatibility. Connect the KNX bus with the indicated KNX+ and KNX− polarity. Assign the physical address with the programming button, load the channel parameters and test each configured function.
The attached device certificate is required for initial KNX Data Secure configuration. Keep it securely with the project records after commissioning; the manufacturer recommends removing it from the device once configuration is complete. Data Secure must be configured in the ETS project and is not a substitute for correct bus installation.
Use the appropriate KNX Secure-capable ETS application and certificate for this exact device. Follow the installation and commissioning manual when enabling secure communication.

EMC emission and immunity compliance is stated to BS EN/EN 50491-5-1/-5-2/-5-3, BS EN/EN 50090-2-2, BS EN/EN 60669-2-1/-2-5 and BS EN/EN 63044-5-1/-5-2/-5-3, with the stated test-report qualification; EAC TP TC 020 is listed. Match the supplied device’s declarations to the intended installation.
Install in an appropriate distribution enclosure and provide external circuit protection for the connected loads. The relay ratings do not establish electronic short-circuit or overload protection, and no automatic fault-recovery mechanism is specified here.
Mechanical Installation and Connections
| Catalogue enclosure dimensions |
72 × 90 × 57 mm (W × H × D) |
| Dimensional tolerance |
±1 mm |
| Mounting |
Four modular units on a 35 mm DIN rail; TS35/7.5 or TS35/15 |
The upper and lower terminal rows provide the eight independent relay contact pairs A–H. The KNX connector is separate and marked − and +. In the lighting and heater examples, the relay switches the external line conductor and the load neutral runs directly to neutral. Do not apply mains voltage to the KNX terminals.
For motor operation, configure the paired relay channels for shutters/blinds and follow the motor installation manual. The protective-earth conductor shown for the motor belongs to the load circuit; it is not a KNX or dimming return.
Use 0.5–4.0 mm² solid or 0.5–2.5 mm² finely stranded wire at the screw terminals. The KNX bus terminal accepts 0.8 mm diameter solid conductors. The catalogue recommends a slotted screwdriver 2.5 × 0.4 to 3.5 × 0.6 mm and 0.8 Nm tightening torque. Follow the supplied installation instructions and terminal markings.
Compatible Equipment and Ordering
The actuator is supplied from a suitable KNX bus system. Select its bus power supply and commissioning interface separately; a dimmable driver is not required for relay ON/OFF switching. DIN rail, distribution enclosure, load wiring, protective devices and connected loads must be selected for the installation.
The listed MEAN WELL LED-driver references are load-selection examples with model-specific limits, not supplied accessories. Check the driver’s full order code and load characteristics before connection.
