MEAN WELL MDR-20 series: Industrial DIN Rail Power Supply - MDR-20-5

Description

MEAN WELL MDR-20-5 is a single-output industrial DIN rail power supply rated at 5 V DC, 3 A and 15 W. The 22.5 mm-wide Class I unit uses free-air convection and mounts on TS-35/7.5 or TS-35/15 rail. It provides an active DC OK signal and an LED indicator. The +V ADJ control allows output-voltage adjustment within the specified range.

Model and DC Output

Complete model MDR-20-5; MDR-20 catalogue revision 2024-10-30. The final code identifies the nominal 5 V DC output.
Rated output 5 V DC / 3 A / 15 W; output-current range 0–3 A.
Voltage adjustment 4.75–5.5 V, using +V ADJ. Keep output current and power within the model ratings.
Ripple and noise 80 mVp-p maximum. Measured at 20 MHz bandwidth using a 12-inch twisted pair terminated with parallel 0.1 µF and 47 µF capacitors.
Voltage tolerance ±2%, including setup tolerance, line regulation and load regulation.
Line / load regulation ±1.0% / ±1%, respectively.
Typical efficiency 76% at the default 230 VAC input, rated-load and 25°C ambient test conditions.

Use the published 15 W rating for this complete model. The family number and small differences in rounded voltage × current values do not replace the catalogue power rating. Apply input and temperature derating together.

Input, Timing and Consumption

Input range 85–264 VAC or 120–370 VDC; AC frequency 47–63 Hz.
Typical AC current 0.55 A at 115 VAC; 0.35 A at 230 VAC.
Typical cold-start inrush 20 A at 115 VAC; 40 A at 230 VAC.
Setup / rise at full load 500 / 30 ms at 230 VAC; 1000 / 30 ms at 115 VAC.
Typical hold-up at full load 50 ms at 230 VAC; 20 ms at 115 VAC.
No-load consumption Less than 0.75 W.
Leakage current Less than 1 mA at 240 VAC.
Switching-frequency reference 60 kHz in the block diagram.

Unless otherwise stated, parameters are measured at 230 VAC input, rated load and 25°C ambient. Setup time is measured at the first cold start; repeated switching on and off may increase setup time.

Protection

Short circuit / overload 105–160% of rated output power: constant-current limiting, with automatic recovery after the fault is removed.
Overvoltage threshold 5.75–6.75 V.
Overvoltage response Output voltage shuts down; re-power the unit to recover.

Protection thresholds are fault-response values, not additional continuous or peak output ratings.

DC OK Active Signal and External Circuits

Signal output The DC OK active-signal entry is 3.75–6 V / 50 mA maximum, referenced to V−. This is a powered signal output, not a built-in dry relay contact.
5 V signal example The catalogue shows a series resistor R of at least 200 Ω from DC OK to a signal node, with a 5.1 V zener diode between that node and V−.
External LED example Connect the LED and series resistor R between DC OK and V− as drawn. R must be at least 1000 Ω for this output-voltage model.
External relay example The drawing connects relay coil RL between DC OK and V−. Coil resistance must be at least 120 Ω for this model; respect the active-output current limit.

The three circuits are application examples on PDF page 4. Their external resistor, zener diode, LED and relay are not identified as supplied accessories, and no complete orderable component codes are given. Select compatible external components using the shown circuit and signal limits.

Cooling, Derating and Environment

Cooling / mounting Free-air convection; the temperature curve applies to vertical mounting.
Ambient-temperature curve Working range −20 to +70°C, subject to derating. For this model, the curve shows 100% load from −20 to +50°C, decreasing linearly to 50% load at +70°C.
Input-voltage curve At 60 Hz AC, 80% load is shown at 85 VAC, rising to 100% at 100 VAC. The 100% plateau continues through 264 VAC. Apply the lower permissible load when temperature and input limits overlap.
Humidity / storage Working: 20–90% RH, non-condensing. Storage: −40 to +85°C, 10–95% RH.
Temperature coefficient ±0.03%/°C over 0–50°C.
High-altitude derating For this fanless supply, reduce the allowed ambient temperature by 3.5°C per 1000 m of altitude above 2000 m, as specified in the catalogue footnote.
Vibration Component: 10–500 Hz, 2G, 10 min/cycle and 60 min on each X, Y and Z axis. Mounting compliance: IEC60068-2-6.

Isolation, Safety and EMC

Protective earth Class I installation: connect the FG protective-earth terminal as shown in the mechanical drawing.
Withstand voltage Input–output: 3 kVAC; input–FG: 2 kVAC; output–FG: 0.5 kVAC.
Insulation resistance 100 MΩ for input–output, input–FG and output–FG, measured at 500 VDC, 25°C and 70% RH.
